The First Ever Tour Of TBPN's Ultradome

40:21

TBPN has never let anyone film behind the scenes of its studio until now. John Coogan and Jordi Hays built the Ultradome, a converted Quonset hut on an LA soundstage lot, into the home of tech's favorite live show, and they gave Ashlee Vance the first full tour. Along the way we go on air as the show's final guest of the day, hit the gong, and get the origin story of how two entrepreneurs looking for their next thing accidentally built a daily, three hour live broadcast about technology, business, and markets. The tour covers all the objects that TBPN fans know and love. There is the horse statue that Jordi had to have after spotting one in a store window, the $15,000 gong that closes out every lightning round, the soundboard John plays like a musical instrument, and the goalposts that physically move every time an AI lab claims it has reached AGI. You also meet Tyler the intern, who went from reply guy to on air character by reassembling a disassembled iPhone in an hour, creating what the guys call the first American assembled iPhone. Underneath the bits is a real business story. John and Jordi explain why they run a tech show from Los Angeles instead of San Francisco, how being physically removed helps them call balls and strikes, why they ran fake ads for Gulfstream before they had a single advertiser, and what it takes to prep and perform six hours a day, five days a week. They also reveal the chat's favorite weapon: the flashbang, which has gone off on everyone from Marc Benioff to Cathie Wood. Quantum Computers Will Crack Encryption Sooner Than You Think

1:38:04

Quantum computing has been ten years away for about thirty years, and Prineha Narang is here to explain what actually changed. A physics professor at UCLA, a U.S. Science Envoy who advises the government on quantum policy, and an operating partner at the deep tech fund DCVC, Narang sits down with Ashlee Vance to sort out what is real about quantum right now and what is still hype. She walks through the news that set off a wave of texts across Silicon Valley, a run of results from Google, Caltech, and the neutral atom startups suggesting that the encryption protecting your bank account, your messages, and the entire internet could be cracked by a quantum computer far sooner than almost anyone expected. The conversation gets specific about why that estimate collapsed from millions of qubits down to roughly 10,000, what post quantum cryptography means for the RSA and elliptic curve encryption we all rely on, and whether it is time to panic about so called Q-Day. Narang also makes the case that quantum and AI have stopped competing and started merging into one giant bucket of next generation compute, where the real question is no longer speed but energy. Then the two of them go somewhere most quantum interviews never do: quantum sensing, the idea that a chip the size of a blueberry could replace GPS, detect a single sneeze in a crowded airport, or one day sit inside the human body reading signals no classical sensor can see. It is an accessible tour of the field, with detours into the race against China, why NVIDIA's video game chips quietly took over science, and whether consciousness itself might run on quantum rules. A New Semi Every 8 Minutes: Inside Tesla's Truck Factory

1:10:37

Tesla opened up its brand new Semi factory for a full walking tour, and we filmed the whole thing. In March of 2026, right as the plant outside Reno, Nevada was coming to life for the start of production, Ashlee Vance walked all 1.7 million square feet with Dan Priestley, the head of Tesla's Semi program. The tour runs the way the factory does, from raw coils of metal and a giant stamping press at one end to a finished electric semi truck rolling through a towering light tunnel at the other. At full speed, this building is meant to turn out 50,000 trucks a year, which works out to a new Semi coming off the line every seven or eight minutes. Along the way you see things few people outside Tesla ever have. Truck cabs glide overhead on some of the heaviest electric monorail carriers in the world, holding assemblies north of 10,000 pounds above the factory floor. Three battery packs, built on the same cells as the Cybertruck, get bolted into a frame in a process Tesla calls battery marriage. The cabs travel down the line sideways, a trick that saved about 40 percent of the floor space. Priestley also tells the origin story of the whole program, which started when JB Straubel asked why Tesla parts were being hauled between its factories on diesel trucks. Diesel semis are about 1 percent of the vehicles on American roads and burn 16 to 18 percent of the fuel. That is the opportunity. The tour ends with a ride in the Semi itself, where Priestley, who went out and got his trucker's license for this job, explains the center driving position, why regenerative braking changes mountain descents, and how a driver can put 300 miles back into the battery during a legally required 30 minute break. Tesla has more than 13 million test miles on these trucks. Now comes the hard part: convincing the trucking industry to switch. If you want to see how American manufacturing actually gets stood up, this is the whole thing, end to end. America Gave Its Factories to China. Can We Get Them Back?

58:17

America forgot how to build things, and a 35 year old from Melbourne named Chris Power is betting billions that he can teach it again. In this Core Memory interview, Ashlee Vance sits down with the founder of Hadrian inside one of its Los Angeles factories, where rows of CNC machines and robots crank out the precision metal parts that go into rockets, satellites, missiles and fighter jets. Power spotted the problem years ago. The mom and pop machine shops that quietly supply American aerospace and defense are run by people in their 60s, their kids never wanted the job, and when those craftsmen retire, decades of skill retire with them. His fix is a full stack software company that captures that expertise, pours it into automated factories, and trains people from Home Depot, the Marines and desk jobs to run advanced manufacturing in about 30 days. The conversation goes straight at the scariest question in tech right now, which is whether the United States can rebuild its industrial base before it actually needs it. Power breaks down how the country offshored more than 90 percent of its manufacturing to China since the 1980s, why it now takes years to replace missiles like the Stinger and Javelin, and how Hadrian is jumping from making individual components to producing entire missiles. He and Ashlee dig into the humanoid robot supply chain that still runs through China, the reason nobody except SpaceX and Tesla seems able to master production, and what a real American Shenzhen would take to build. It gets blunt about how far behind we are and how fast things could unravel if a fight over Taiwan ever started. This Might Be The Most Important Factory In America: The SendCutSend Factory Tour

43:37

We get the full tour of SendCutSend, the online metal fabrication company that has quietly become one of the busiest factories in America, and you get to see the entire operation from the loading dock back. Ashlee Vance walks the floor with founder Jim Belosic and follows a raw sheet of metal through every step it takes to leave as a finished part, roughly 100,000 of them every single day. You see where the raw aluminum and steel come in, the 12 kilowatt Amada fiber lasers running four shifts a day, the water jets and CNC routers, the deburring and powder coating lines, the brand new five axis machine shop, and the shipping dock where 20,000 orders a month go out the door. Along the way Belosic explains how software runs the whole place, why he bought a baggage tug off Facebook Marketplace instead of spending 4 million dollars on robots, and the philosophy that keeps it all moving. Find good people, give them great software, and "just use dudes." It is also one of the best looks you will get at the state of American manufacturing. SendCutSend is a front row seat to reshoring, high mix low volume production, and the quiet comeback of making things in the United States. Belosic gets into why orders are flooding in, how the company complements the mom and pop shops instead of killing them, and what surprise ends up in every single box. He's Beating China In Metal Manufacturing: Jim Belosic And SendCutSend

1:21:00

If you have ever wondered who actually makes the metal parts behind America's rockets, robots, and cars, the answer is increasingly a quiet company in Reno called SendCutSend. We drove to Nevada to spend a day with founder and CEO Jim Belosic, the guy whose name keeps coming up at every hardware startup, aerospace company, and defense shop in the country. You upload a design, his machines cut, bend, and machine it, and the finished part shows up at your door, sometimes by noon the next day. No venture capital for years, no outside sales team, no hype. Just a fast, easy way to turn an idea into a real piece of metal. Jim takes us through the whole story, from the $750,000 fiber laser he bought before he knew if anyone would buy anything, to the first paid order ever placed, a batch of pickleball keychains. We get into how a graphic designer turned Facebook software founder ended up running one of the most important on-demand manufacturing businesses in the United States, why he built almost all the software himself, and how SendCutSend now serves more than 300,000 customers that range from his mom to rocket companies, Zipline, DoorDash, and Fortune 500 names he is not allowed to mention. Along the way he explains the Teslonda, his half Tesla, half Honda hot rod that forced the whole company into existence. This one is really a conversation about American manufacturing and whether the reindustrialization everyone keeps talking about is real or theater. Jim has strong, unhyped views on competing with China, why "software first" is often a pitch built for investors, how he trains a 19 year old with no experience to run a million dollar machine, and why he refuses to build a business that only works if there is a war. Full disclosure, SendCutSend later came on as a Core Memory sponsor, but this interview was filmed months before that and was done independently. We Got Scanned By Midjourney's New Body Machine

1:26:31

Midjourney, the company that taught computers to dream up images, just built a machine that scans the inside of your body. Founder David Holz pulled the cover off it at a members only club in a rough stretch of downtown San Francisco this week, and Ashlee Vance and Kylie Robison were two of the only journalists in the room. What they saw was a full body ultrasound scanner that lowers you into a pool of water, images your insides in about a minute, and throws off terabytes of data per scan. It is one of eight products the self funded AI company plans to ship, including a luxury spa to house the machines and, according to chatter at the party, a brain computer interface. In this episode of Core Memory they break down exactly what they saw, why the $40 billion dream might be the easy part, and what happens when a profitable AI startup decides to reinvent the annual physical. From there the conversation turns to the biggest fight in AI right now. The U.S. government banned Anthropic's newest model, the first time Washington has ever pulled an American AI model offline, and Ashlee was inside Anthropic as it happened. He walks through the leaks, the politics, and why the precedent should worry every other lab. The two also get into Google DeepMind's strange and brilliant partnership with EVE Online to train world models, Noam Shazeer leaving Google for OpenAI, the quiet death of the "scaling has hit a wall" narrative, and Snap's new $2,200 smart glasses that might be too big and too late. It is not all AI. Ashlee tells the story of nearly walking off with one of Rafael Nadal's rackets at Larry Ellison's compound, the two compare notes on Bryan Johnson's skincare routine, and Ashlee goes fishing with a robot that kills fish using a centuries old Japanese method to make better sushi.
