Hermeus is building supersonic jets with nobody on board, and Mach 5 is the goal. At Spaceport America in New Mexico, CEO Zach Shore and cofounder and executive chairman AJ Piplica sit down with Ashlee Vance before another test flight of Quarterhorse Mk 2.1. The plane is roughly the size of an F-16 and uses the same type of engine. It broke the sound barrier on its third flight. Having another airplane on the way makes it easier to take a risk with the first. AJ explains how Hermeus plans to combine a conventional jet engine with a ramjet to reach hypersonic speeds. Zach makes the case for an unmanned bomb truck and explains why military business has to come before passenger flights. They get into SpaceX's example, Anduril, competition with China, and what it would take to bring Kelly Johnson's Skunk Works approach back to American aviation. Even with a working aircraft, getting time to test it can be a struggle. Today's window is two hours. Realbotix is building humanoid robots it hopes you will want to spend time with. At the company's Las Vegas headquarters, CEO Andrew Kiguel and robot designer Matt McMullen join Ashlee Vance to explain the peculiar work of giving AI a human body. Their creations, Aria and Melody, have silicone skin, cameras in their eyes, and faces that can be peeled off and replaced. They also wear regular clothes. Kiguel has found himself running a robotics company where somebody has to worry about the manicures. McMullen traces his path from making RealDoll sex dolls to building AI companions, while Kiguel makes the case for robots that can greet hotel guests, tutor students, and keep older people company. They explain how large language models changed what their machines could say, why walking is low on their priorities, and what it takes to give a robot a personality. Ashlee brings up his father's need for conversation and asks how close these machines really are to feeling human. Tesla, Figure, and the money pouring into factory robots get some pointed criticism. For all the talk of realism, McMullen still wants you to know you're talking to a robot. Brent Underwood bought a California ghost town with friends and ended up giving it his life. The creator of Ghost Town Living joins Ashlee Vance at Cerro Gordo, an old silver mining town near Death Valley, to explain how a late night real estate listing became an obsession. He moved up during the pandemic, watched the historic American Hotel burn down, and committed to rebuilding it at the end of an eight mile dirt road. A functioning shower now counts as a major improvement. Sitting beside the mine shaft that once powered the town, Brent talks about spending days underground, exploring crumbling tunnels, and piecing together the lives of miners through old letters and abandoned belongings. He and Ashlee get into the pleasures of working with your hands, the pressure to keep feeding YouTube, and the California permitting battles slowing the hotel's return. They also look out over Owens Lake and discuss what Los Angeles took from the valley below. Brent wants people to come stay, learn the history, and help give the place another life. First, he needs to finish the hotel.
