OpenAI spent $34 billion in 2025 and posted an operating loss of nearly $21 billion. Seeing those figures made me want to understand what was really going on. Many times on The Diary Of A CEO, I’ve heard how AI is going to become the most valuable technology in human history. But when I saw those spending figures, I had to ask a very different question: do the underlying economics actually support the story we’re being told? So I brought in Ed Zitron. Ed is a technology writer, researcher and one of the most outspoken critics of the current AI boom. He writes *Where’s Your Ed At*, hosts the *Better Offline* podcast and spends an extraordinary amount of time digging through company financials, infrastructure spending and the relationships between some of the biggest companies in Silicon Valley. His argument isn’t that AI is useless. His argument is that we’ve blurred the line between what these products can do today and the financial expectations we've placed on them. We discussed things like: - Why he believes OpenAI could become the centre of a much bigger financial problem. - The enormous amount of money being spent on data centres and whether the demand exists to justify it. - How money can move between AI companies, chip companies and cloud providers in ways that make the industry appear healthier than it might really be. - What could happen to markets, jobs and ordinary investors if the economics eventually stop working. I’ve had many conversations about how powerful AI could become, but this conversation forced me to look much more closely at the balance sheets underneath the hype. When trillions of dollars, massive global infrastructure and our economic futures are pinned to one narrative, we have to listen to the person standing on the other side of the room asking if the numbers add up. Whether Ed turns out to be right or wrong, these are questions everyone paying attention to AI needs to hear. Out now on all platforms ❤️👊🏾

A man’s brain actually shrinks when he becomes a dad? 🧠 Dr Darby Saxbe explains that fathers can lose grey matter after having a child, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. She compares it to the brain clearing out unnecessary debris, becoming more efficient at processing social information and responding to the needs of a child. And the more hands-on the father is, the greater these changes can be.

A man’s brain can shrink by around 1% when he becomes a father. I’ve seen how much fatherhood can change a man’s life. I had no idea how much it was changing his brain too. So I sat down with Dr Darby Saxbe. Darby is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern California and one of the few researchers in the world who has tracked what happens to men’s brains as they transition into fatherhood. Her research revealed something I had never heard before: becoming a dad literally rewires your brain. And the more involved a father is, the more pronounced those physical changes can be. We discussed things like: - How becoming a father can physically reshape parts of the male brain. - The surprising effect having a baby can have on a man’s testosterone. - Why some fathers experience postpartum depression. - What having a child can do to even a strong relationship. - What new fathers can do to become better, more confident parents. What I liked about Darby is that she isn’t just interpreting other people’s research. In her own lab, she has followed first-time parents from pregnancy into parenthood, scanning fathers’ brains, measuring their hormones and studying how couples change before and after having a baby. Something I found myself coming back to afterwards was how easy it is to see the trade-offs of having children from the outside. The sleepless nights, stress, financial pressure and sacrifice are obvious. The meaning, connection and sense of purpose that parenthood can create are much harder to see. Darby’s work gives us a much clearer picture of both. If you’re a parent, might become one one day, or simply want to understand why parenthood can change people so profoundly, I really recommend this conversation. Out now on all platforms ❤️👊🏾

What actually happens to your brain, and how fast or slow do you age when you become a parent? Parenting expert Dr. Darby Saxbe reveals the surprising science of the "parental brain" and how fatherhood physically reshapes a man's mind, why dads lose grey matter, what really happens to testosterone, and why the "dad bod" might be nature's design. Dr. Darby Saxbe is a professor of psychology and a leading researcher on the neuroscience of parenthood. What happens when an economist who predicted the 2008 crash sits opposite a political commentator who grew up under communism? You get two very different explanations for why Britain and the wider West feel increasingly unstable. I sat down with Professor Steve Keen and Konstantin Kisin to unpack some of the biggest questions facing the UK and the US right now. Steve has spent decades challenging mainstream economic thinking and questioning the assumptions that governments and economists use to make decisions. Konstantin grew up in the Soviet Union and is now the co-host of Triggernometry, where much of his work explores politics, culture, immigration and the growing frustration he sees across Western countries. They agree that something is going wrong, but disagree quite significantly on why. That’s exactly why I wanted to put these two perspectives across the table from each other. We discussed: - Why Britain has struggled to achieve meaningful economic growth. - Whether wealth redistribution would actually improve people’s lives. - How immigration has become such a defining political issue across Europe. - If the economic risks of climate change are far greater than we’ve been told. - What happens if AI destroys huge numbers of jobs. - The disruption around the Strait of Hormuz could create another major economic shock. Steve believes another global crisis could be coming. Konstantin argues that some of the biggest threats facing the West are already unfolding. What made this discussion interesting was seeing both of them pushed beyond their usual arguments and challenged on the assumptions behind what they believe. Steve offered a very different way of thinking about the economy, particularly when it came to climate change and the risks he believes are still being underestimated. Konstantin came at many of the same problems from a completely different direction, particularly around migration, politics and the growing frustration he sees across Western countries. With questions around the economy, migration, energy and AI becoming harder to ignore, hearing two very different explanations for what is happening felt especially important.
