♾️ Hello everyone, welcome to "Unknown." I'm Meng Yan.
Looking back in the future, April 2025 might be a month worth remembering for me. This month, I quieted down to think about some things, made a few decisions, and recorded this episode.
This episode contains three stories about money and desire, a few articles, a book, a paper, a movie clip, and some thoughts that tie them all together.
It's not meant to preach; it's more like a conversation I'm having with myself, a gift I'm giving to myself.
I hope these moments that once illuminated me can also bring you some inspiration.

♾️ Hello everyone, welcome to "Nobody Knows." I'm Meng Yan.
This episode is a conversation between me and A Jiao. Our connection began with a feature article in "People" magazine, titled: "I Just Like Being Alive." In the article, A Jiao expressed her fondness for "Nobody Knows" and for me. On the day the article was published, many friends forwarded it to me.
Being liked and recognized is certainly a very happy thing, but after I finished reading the article, what intrigued and even shocked me more was the protagonist of the article, Zhang A Jiao, and the story that happened to her.
I have two curiosities about A Jiao. The first is: How does she manage to solve any problem thrown at her? Whether it was independently handling the entire fundraising, investment, management, and exit process in her first job, or facing her father's cancer diagnosis and her own cancer in life, then starting from scratch in a foreign country after recovery, and her second diagnosis. It seems that no matter what difficult problems the universe presents, A Jiao can always answer them and deliver perfectly.
I want to know how she does it, and even more, I want to know what lies behind this so-called resilience and vitality. Is it anxiety? Fear? A need to prove herself? Or something else?
The second curiosity might be a bit cruel, but I really want to ask her: When a person truly faces the imminence of death, what do they see through, what do they let go of, and what still matters to them?
On the morning of August 29th, I arrived in Shanghai. When we met, A Jiao was wearing a long red dress, half-lying on the sofa outside the recording studio of Xiaoyuzhou. It was clear that after several consecutive days of chemotherapy, she was a bit tired. Actually, I wasn't in great shape that day either. After a cold, I had been coughing for a long time, and it was getting worse. I wasn't even sure if I could finish recording the podcast that day, but both of us showed up as scheduled.
At the end of the program, A Jiao and I didn't say goodbye as usual; instead, we hugged.
A Jiao, like me, loves watching sunsets.
She said, I hope that the next time you see the sunset, you'll remember this afternoon's conversation.
I think I will.

36:46 Gains and losses come from the same source: The logic that makes you money can also make you lose money. Advantages and risks are often two sides of the same coin.
39:02 Fundraising, Investment, Management, Exit: The complete process of primary market investment, divided into four stages: fundraising (raising money from investors), investment (putting money into companies), management (helping manage the company's development post-investment), and exit (exiting the investment to realize returns).
72:05 The mention of "the photographer stepping back a few steps" may refer to the principle of "minimize harm" in journalism ethics. The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) explicitly states in its ethics code: journalists should not intrude on others' privacy excessively in pursuit of news material (Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance or undue intrusiveness); they should exercise heightened sensitivity and respect the autonomy of minors, victims, and those unable to fully consent (Use heightened sensitivity); they should avoid pandering to lurid curiosity by exploiting others' pain as a gimmick (Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity). Therefore, "stepping back a few steps" (or "restraint," "respect for the subject," etc.) in journalism represents a professional ethical reminder: although some images may have news value, if they could cause secondary harm to the subject or be purely consumed, professional news creators should exercise restraint, not push the lens forward, but choose to step back.
