♾️ Hello everyone, welcome to "Nobody Knows." I'm Meng Yan.
This episode is a conversation between me and A Jiao. Our connection began with a feature article in "People" magazine, titled: "I Just Like Being Alive." In the article, A Jiao expressed her fondness for "Nobody Knows" and for me. On the day the article was published, many friends forwarded it to me.
Being liked and recognized is certainly a very happy thing, but after I finished reading the article, what intrigued and even shocked me more was the protagonist of the article, Zhang A Jiao, and the story that happened to her.
I have two curiosities about A Jiao. The first is: How does she manage to solve any problem thrown at her? Whether it was independently handling the entire fundraising, investment, management, and exit process in her first job, or facing her father's cancer diagnosis and her own cancer in life, then starting from scratch in a foreign country after recovery, and her second diagnosis. It seems that no matter what difficult problems the universe presents, A Jiao can always answer them and deliver perfectly.
I want to know how she does it, and even more, I want to know what lies behind this so-called resilience and vitality. Is it anxiety? Fear? A need to prove herself? Or something else?
The second curiosity might be a bit cruel, but I really want to ask her: When a person truly faces the imminence of death, what do they see through, what do they let go of, and what still matters to them?
On the morning of August 29th, I arrived in Shanghai. When we met, A Jiao was wearing a long red dress, half-lying on the sofa outside the recording studio of Xiaoyuzhou. It was clear that after several consecutive days of chemotherapy, she was a bit tired. Actually, I wasn't in great shape that day either. After a cold, I had been coughing for a long time, and it was getting worse. I wasn't even sure if I could finish recording the podcast that day, but both of us showed up as scheduled.
At the end of the program, A Jiao and I didn't say goodbye as usual; instead, we hugged.
A Jiao, like me, loves watching sunsets.
