“Synchronicity and the Matter of God” Audio recording of the “Digestible Jung” workshop led by (the now late) Jungian psychoanalyst J. Gary Sparks in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2011. Throughout the “Digestible Jung” series we have examined the various ways Jung understood the guidance of the Self within the analytic process. The first formulation of the guiding capacity of the unconscious presented in Symbols of Transformation was further elaborated in Jung’s subsequent works. In his alchemical studies, for example in Mysterium Coniunctionis, he stresses the ego’s role in activating the positive influence of the unconscious by holding the tension of the opposites. In Aion he investigated the role of withdrawing projections on activating the healing power of the Self. In “Answer to Job” we found that the ego had to stand against the destructive aspects of the Self in order to bring forth its creative capacities. Jung’s “Psychology of the Transference” shows the role of erotic fire in bringing the Self to consciousness. The thread common to this series of workshops has been the capacity of the Self to lead and guide a person’s growth into maturity. In the final workshop we will survey the implications of this inborn healing process to religion and science. ‘What does psychological healing have to do with God and religion?’ will be the first question we tackle. We will also consider the challenges Jung’s observations on our inner psychology put to contemporary science. Finally, an intuitive sketch concerning how Jung’s work may be paving the way for the unification of science and religion will bring the “Digestible Jung” workshops to a close. References: C.G. Fiann Paul is a Zürich-trained Jungian psychoanalyst living and working around the globe. The world’s most record-breaking explorer, he has led pioneering expeditions in the world’s most challenging environments, earning 42 Guinness World Records. Though known for his ocean expeditions, his favorite frontier has always been consciousness. Initially trained as an architect and formerly a professional artist, Fiann is the creator of several national-level art projects. Today a Jungian psychoanalyst, leadership consultant, and lecturer at the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich, he merges exploration, leadership, psychology, and art into a unified inquiry into human transformation and lived initiation into the unknown. His background includes what he regards as three forms of experiential education: completing the Ocean Explorers Grand Slam (rowing all five oceans), living on five continents, and twelve years of personal and clinical experience with plant medicines, psychedelic-assisted therapy and integration, supporting individuals through transformational processes. He is the founder of the International Jungian Psychedelic Association (IJPA), serves as president of the Ocean Rowing Society International (ORSI), and holds the distinction of Freedom of the City of London, in addition to the title of Chartered Geographer of the Royal Geographical Society, among many other distinctions. He describes himself as a psychologically self-made person, devoted to the quest for meaning, authenticity, and self-expression. Next month, Fiann will be presenting a series of public lectures and seminars at the C.G. Jung Institute in Küsnacht, Switzerland which will be available to attend online by registering with the C.G. Paul Bishop, Ph.D. is a Jungian scholar, professor, and writer living and working in Glasgow, Scotland. After graduating from the College of St. Mary Magdalen at the University of Oxford he spent a year as a DAAD Scholar at the DLA Marbach before entering the doctoral program at Oxford’s Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages. He was awarded the Lady Julia Henry Fellowship at Harvard University and spent a year as an Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Fellow at Marbach. He graduated with a Ph.D. from Oxford in 1994 with the dissertation, “C.G. Jung’s Reception of Friedrich Nietzsche,” later published as the book, The Dionysian Self. For twelve years, he held the position of Professor of German at the University of Glasgow, and in 2013 was named the William Jacks Chair in Modern Languages at the university’s School of Modern Languages and Cultures, where he currently serves as an Honorary Professorial Research Fellow. Professor Bishop’s most recent books include Discourses of Philology and Theology in Nietzsche, and Nietzsche’s Writing Against Religion and the Crisis of Faith. He has contributed chapters to such recent publications as, Ideas and Influences on Eranos, Self-Optimization in Modernist Culture, and Where Is Soul? Psychology in Modernity. His current project is a four-volume series of studies for Chiron Publications, examining the great canonical texts that exercised a decisive influence on the development of analytical psychology and the thought of C.G. Jung. The first two volumes – on Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival (discussed in Episode 135) and on Goethe’s Faust (the subject of this episode) have been published, and in the pipeline are a book on Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra and, rounding off the series, a study of The Red Book, seen as a contribution to the tradition we can call the Epic of Transformation. At this year’s congress of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP), Professor Bishop was awarded Honorary Membership of the IAAP, and a few weeks ago he was presented with a commemorative stone of this very prestigious honor while visiting Copenhagen to teach a class on The Red Book at the Jung Institute of Denmark. For the return of Speaking of Jung's spin-off show, "Speaking with Laura," I’ve invited Gary P. Caton to discuss the astrological chart of C.G. Jung. Gary is a trans-disciplinary Hermetic practitioner integrating diverse traditions, art forms and practices gathered over a full Saturn-cycle. Initiated an astrologer by a magnificent dream in 1993, he has since become a noted contributor to the 21st Century Renaissance in astrology and astral magic. He is also an accomplished counselor, writer, podcaster, teacher, and photographer. Gary holds a degree in counseling psychology and has served as a Qualified Mental Health Practitioner in North Carolina. His first book, Hermetica Triptycha, Volume 1: The Mercury Elemental Year with Ephemerides 1925-2050, was published by Rubedo Press in 2017. I met Gary in 2018 when I attended his lecture "Predictive Applications of Planetary Nodes, the Latitude Cycle and Retrograde Loops" at the United Astrology Conference (UAC) here in Chicago. He joins us today to take a look at the birth chart of C.G. Jung. ✦ ✦ ✦ SHOW NOTES Temenos Dream recording app: https://temenosdream.com Temenos Dream episode: https://youtu.be/hwZpmdLWg4s United Astrology Conference (UAC): https://uacastrology.com C.G. Murray Stein, Ph.D., is a Jungian psychoanalyst, author, writer, lecturer and playwright who works as a supervising and training analyst at the International School of Analytical Psychology in Zürich, Switzerland. After graduating from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, he went on to attend Yale Divinity School, earning a Master of Divinity in 1969. That same year he began training as a Jungian psychoanalyst at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich, Switzerland, and worked as a managing editor for James Hillman’s Spring Publications. Upon graduating with a Diploma in Analytical Psychology, at the age of 30, he returned to the United States and settled in Chicago where he established himself as a training analyst and began doctoral work at the University of Chicago Divinity School. He is a founding member of the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago, was elected its first president, served for five years as head of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts. Along with fellow Jungian analyst Dr. Nathan Schwartz-Salant (Ep. 26), Dr. Stein co-organized and co-hosted the Ghost Ranch Conferences in New Mexico. The papers from those conferences were later published in The Chiron Clinical Series after the two co-founded Chiron Publications in 1983. The following year, Dr. Stein was awarded his Ph.D. in religion and psychological studies. While serving as Honorary Secretary of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) under Thomas Kirsch, Dr. Stein began traveling widely, lecturing in China, Europe, Japan, Mexico, and South Africa. Dr. Stein served as president of the IAAP for three years and in 2003, at age 60, returned to Switzerland where he became a training and supervising analyst at the International School of Analytical Psychology (ISAP Zürich). He served as the school’s president from 2008-2012 and continues to chair their Zürich Lecture Series. He is the author, co-author, editor, and co-editor of numerous books, articles, essays, and stage plays, all of which are listed on the special Murray Stein page in our Blog (https://speakingofjung.com/blog/2021/7/5/murray-stein-ii). His most popular book, Jung’s Map of the Soul, has been published in 13 languages, and in 2020, Chiron began publishing his Collected Writings. He now lives a quiet life in the mountains outside of Zürich where he continues to write plays with friend and fellow Jungian analyst Dr. Henry Abramovitch (Ep. 47 & 126). Their most recent collaborations are Twilight at Bollingen and Reading Room. Dr. Stein joins us today, after two and a half years, for his 15th appearance on Speaking of Jung to discuss his latest book, Jung and Alchemy: A Path to Individuation, published by Chiron on July 24. Part II: Steven Herrmann, Ph.D., is a Jungian psychoanalyst, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and author in Oakland, California. Eva Wertenschlag-Birkhäuser, M.A., is a Jungian psychoanalyst in Bern, Switzerland. Born and raised in Basel, Eva studied history and German literature at the University of Basel, earning a master’s degree in 1975. The following year, she began training as a Jungian psychoanalyst at the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich where she earned her diploma in 1985 with the thesis, “The Dialogue between King Caled and the Alchemist Morienus: Love and Alchemy.” Her thesis advisors were Marie-Louise von Franz, Theo Abt, and Godi Isler. Since then, Eva has been practicing as a Jungian psychoanalyst, and in 1994 became a member of the Board of the Research and Training Centre for Depth Psychology According to C.G. Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz in Zürich. She served as president from 2005 until earlier this year and remains active as a faculty member and training analyst. Along with her brother Kaspar Birkhäuser, Ph.D., Eva co-founded the Birkhäuser-Oeri Foundation which preserves and catalogues the work of their late parents, artist and analysand Peter Birkhäuser (1911-1976) and Jungian psychoanalyst Sibylle Birkhäuser-Oeri (1914-1971). The Foundation possesses the comprehensive body of paintings, graphic art, and writings by the couple, as well as valuable personal records and revealing background material. Research and publication of the understanding of these unique documents remains ongoing, and their space in Basel is open to the public. Together, Eva and Kaspar have published two books about their father’s work. Light From the Darkness: Paintings by Peter Birkhäuser with Commentary by Marie-Louise von Franz was republished earlier this year by Daimon Verlag (https://amzn.to/40K4q3g). This new bilingual edition includes additional paintings and 38 full-page color illustrations on art paper. And the comprehensive coffee table book, Der Rote Faden: Malerei und Grafik von Peter Birkhäuser (The Red Thread: Paintings and Graphics by Peter Birkhäuser), includes over 100 illustrations of Peter’s paintings, more than 50 published here for the first time, as well as historical documents and photos (https://amzn.to/4pVAps5). Eva’s in-depth book on the religious and healing dimensions of her father’s artwork, Windows on Eternity: The Paintings of Peter Birkhäuser – An Interpretation Based on Depth Psychology (which is now my favorite Jungian book of all-time), was published by Daimon Verlag in 2009 (https://amzn.to/4ny669c). It includes two essays by Marie-Louise von Franz: “Peter Birkhäuser – A Modern Artist Who Strikes a New Path,” and “Funeral Address for Peter Birkhäuser.” In addition to research and teaching on alchemy and art, Eva has investigated and lectured on the culture of the West African Dogon for many years. She recently published a book about the creation myth of the Dogon people where she explores their archaic vision of the creation and transformation of consciousness. Das Dritte Wort: Der Schöpfungsmythos der Dogon (The Third Word: The Dogon Creation Myth) was published in German in 2022 (https://amzn.to/4gBbhTo). Her essay, “The Dogon: The Creation of Consciousness Through Agriculture,” was published in English in the book Cultural Understanding of Soils: The Importance of Cultural Diversity and of the Inner World by Springer in 2023. 🔊 Audio edition with full show notes: https://speakingofjung.com/podcast/2025/10/2/episode-150-eva-wertenschlag-birkhauser 📖 Book reading: https://youtu.be/fIUVsZ6Brxg ✦ ✦ ✦ 📚 BOOKS: Light From the Darkness – https://amzn.to/40K4q3g (14% off at Amazon US) Der Rote Faden – https://amzn.to/4pVAps5 Windows on Eternity – https://amzn.to/4ny669c The Mother: Archetypal Image in Fairy Tales – https://amzn.to/42rgMOC (As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.) ✦ ✦ ✦ 🫙 PATREON: https://patreon.com/SpeakingofJung 💸 DONATE: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=93DEK8NBQ6UGJ ♥️ SUPPORT PAGE: https://speakingofjung.com/support 📧 NEWSLETTER: https://speakingofjung.com/campaigns/view-campaign/BnPow7zhgpj7fWElEhAoeuvrVW3qYfagnk-QLnW8zPZ9InKWH7lVeZuPHQWMJrGUDHqYN5PfRUa0Sl6UjTIsfDhE5VyUsWDD 📲 DREAM APP: https://inf.temenosdream.com/eiNh/speakofjungyt ✦ ✦ ✦ SPEAKING OF JUNG: Website – https://speakingofjung.com Twitter/X – https://x.com/jungianLaura Instagram – https://instagram.com/jungianlaura Subscribe to this YouTube channel ✦ ✦ ✦

Christophe Le Mouël, Ph.D., is a theoretical physicist and mathematician, and a Jungian analyst-in-training, in Los Angeles, California. A native of France, he studied at the University of Sciences in Montpellier where he earned a master’s degree in computer science and a Ph.D. in theoretical and mathematical physics with a dissertation on aspects of electroweak symmetry breaking in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. He spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow in high energy physics at the Aristotle University of Sciences in Greece where he researched features of new physics at very high energy levels, pointing to implications for astrophysics’ dark matter puzzle. After returning to France, Dr. Le Mouël worked as a physics expert and engineer, consulting for the French National Center for Nuclear Energy. He then made his way to the United States where he became executive director of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles in 2007 and continues to serve in that role to this day. Since 2010, he has served on the editorial board of Psychological Perspectives, the Los Angeles Jung Institute’s quarterly journal of Jungian thought. In 2015, he was named their science editor and became editor-in-chief in 2017. He is currently an analyst candidate-in-training at the Research and Training Center for Depth Psychology According to C.G. Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz in Zürich, Switzerland. His particular area of interest is the connection between matter and psyche, and bringing ideas from physics to his work with dreams. His correspondence with Marie-Louise von Franz two years before her death led to his work on the book, Conversations with Marie-Louise von Franz on Synchronicity and Numbers: Insights and Amplifications, co-edited with Swiss psychotherapist Robin Mindell. The book chronicles a series of conversations with von Franz at the end of her life (1993-1998) and it is scheduled to be published on Oct. 8, 2025 by Inner City Books (https://amzn.to/3IW13k7). Funding for the book was provided in part by the Marie-Louise von Franz Institute for Studies in Synchronicity and by Nancy Swift Furlotti’s Recollections, LLC. I first encountered Dr. Le Mouël while watching his presentation, “Signs in the Sky in Jung’s Red Book and Dreams,” during the panel discussion on flying saucers presented by the Jung Institute of Los Angeles in January. His talk was part of a longer paper discussing the changes in our times using Jung’s images from the Red Book. Dr. Le Mouël’s other publications include the articles “Jung’s Axioms: An Introduction to Jung’s ‘Note on Number,’” “Psyche in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” and “Perspective: Transcendence and Wisdom.” 🔊 AUDIO + SHOW NOTES: https://speakingofjung.com/podcast/2025/9/5/episode-149-christophe-le-mouel 📘 THE BOOK: Conversations with Marie-Louise von Franz on Synchronicity and Numbers https://amzn.to/3IW13k7 (As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.) ✦ ✦ ✦ 🫙 PATREON: https://patreon.com/SpeakingofJung 💸 DONATE: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=93DEK8NBQ6UGJ ♥️ SUPPORT PAGE: https://speakingofjung.com/support 📧 NEWSLETTER: https://speakingofjung.com/campaigns/view-campaign/BnPow7zhgpj7fWElEhAoeuvrVW3qYfagnk-QLnW8zPZ9InKWH7lVeZuPHQWMJrGUDHqYN5PfRUa0Sl6UjTIsfDhE5VyUsWDD 📲 DREAM APP: https://inf.temenosdream.com/eiNh/speakofjungyt ✦ ✦ ✦ SPEAKING OF JUNG: Website – https://speakingofjung.com Twitter/X – https://x.com/jungianLaura Instagram – https://instagram.com/jungianlaura Subscribe to this YouTube channel ✦ ✦ ✦

Kathrin Schaeppi is a Jungian psychoanalyst and federally licensed psychotherapist in private practice in Basel, Switzerland. A Swiss-American, Kathrin completed her undergraduate work at the University of Massachusetts and went on to earn a Master of Liberal Arts in women’s studies from San Diego State, a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Goddard College, and a Master of Science in communications management from the University of Lugano. After twenty years in the pharmaceutical research industry, she began studying psychology at the International School of Analytical Psychology in Zürich (ISAP), first earning a Certificate of Continuing Education followed by six years of training to become a Jungian psychoanalyst. During that time, she worked as a psychotherapist at the Sonneneck Psychosomatic Specialist Clinic in Badenweiler, Germany in a practical internship for the Swiss Psychotherapist Degree. Kathrin graduated from ISAP with a Diploma in Analytical Psychology and began private practice in 2018. In addition to her practice, Kathrin puts her heart and soul into research, teaching, and supervision. At ISAP, she heads the Picture Interpretation Department, co-founded the Picture Collection, and serves as a member of the Zürich Lecture Series team. Last year, Kathrin played the role of Aniela Jaffé in the stage production of Eranos: A Play alongside Speaking of Jung guests Dariane Pictet (Ep. 144) and Paul Brutsche (Ep. 147). Her essay, “About Being Aniela,” was published in the book containing the screenplay by Jungian analysts Murray Stein and Henry Abramovitch (see Ep. 47). This year, she resumed the role of Aniela in the new play, “Twilight at Bollingen,” performed at ISAP’s Jungian Odyssey in May. Kathrin’s publications include the illustrated family chronicle Reunion: Schaeppi of Horgen, the prose-poetry collection Cancer Mon Amour, and the creative biography Sonja Sekula: Grace in a Cow’s Eye. Since 2011, she has been guiding tours on Carl Jung’s early years in Basel, expanding her knowledge through ongoing research and uncovering new insights into the historical and intellectual richness of the city—her birthplace and home. That research has coalesced into the new book C.G. Jung—The Basel Years: A Walking Guide (https://amzn.to/4mu9zFf), which will officially launch at this year’s IAAP Congress in Zürich and is now available worldwide from Daimon Verlag. Next year, Kathrin will be joined by fellow Speaking of Jung guests Christian Roesler (Ep. 127) and Sonu Shamdasani (Ep. 75) for the Psychological Society of Basel’s symposium, 150 Years of C.G. Jung, taking place at the University of Basel on February 28th and March 1st. Kathrin will be presenting her research and lead participants on a guided walking tour. 🔊 Audio Edition + Show Notes https://speakingofjung.com/podcast/2025/8/13/episode-148-kathrin-schaeppi 📷 Photo Credits • Eranos: A Play – Dariane Pictet • Aniela Jaffé – 'Reflections on the Life and Dreams of C.G. Fiann Paul is a Zürich-trained Jungian psychoanalyst and world record-holding explorer and endurance athlete. A multi-faceted Jungian and modern-day Renaissance figure, his life reads like a myth written in both ink and saltwater. He is the world’s most record-breaking explorer, the only human to have rowed every ocean, and, as a pioneering polar expedition leader, the architect of over 40 Guinness World Records. A question about the expedition he led across the Drake Passage was once part of the American television show Jeopardy! But his voyages are not confined to geography. Fiann is also a practicing Jungian psychoanalyst, whose inner expeditions rival his polar crossings. His foremost area of exploration is consciousness. He lectures at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich and works at the intersection of depth psychology and elite performance. His practice bridges the physical and the archetypal, from the gymnasium to the soul, from indigenous wisdom to leadership consulting. His insights have appeared across the world’s leading media outlets. His artistic work in photography, music, and poetic storytelling arises from the same place as his athletic records, a need to give form to what moves through him. Trained as an architect, Fiann has lived on five continents, shaped by diverse cultures, an experience he calls his experiential education. His proudest achievement is not any accolade or title, but the act of becoming a psychologically self-made person, someone rebuilt without borrowed templates. Among his other notable titles and accreditations are: Chartered Geographer at the Royal Geographical Society, London; European Engineer at the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI), Brussels; President of the Ocean Rowing Society International, London; and Honorary Master Mariner of the Association of Master Mariners, Gdynia, Poland. This is not a conversation with merely a former professional athlete or artist. It is a meeting with someone who does not fear the unknown. 🔊 AUDIO EDITION + SHOW NOTES: https://speakingofjung.com/podcast/2025/6/11/episode-145-fiann-paul ✦ ✦ ✦ LINKS: Row, Laugh, Explore (Fiann’s official website) – https://www.rowlaughexplore.com Fiann Paul Photography – https://fiannpaul.com/gallery Fiann Paul on Spotify (Main Artist • Composer • Lyricist • Producer) – https://open.spotify.com/artist/02Pi72LIIHNBwUl7VKX5Jl No♪es: Retrospective Lyrical Blog (notes on Fiann’s music) – https://www.rowlaughexplore.com/notes ✦ ✦ ✦ 🫙 PATREON: https://patreon.com/SpeakingofJung 💸 DONATE: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=93DEK8NBQ6UGJ ♥️ SUPPORT PAGE: https://speakingofjung.com/support 📧 NEWSLETTER: https://speakingofjung.com/campaigns/view-campaign/X62KpGeOHR5BwPSP_9E77LkVQkcWIGburQm43SpIGb0_gMt-Hq5fUP3W6dRkHin-UghD_wyGi-mX-_XfduLM5FSGAdwNUegB 📲 DREAM APP: https://inf.temenosdream.com/eiNh/speakofjungyt ✦ ✦ ✦ SPEAKING OF JUNG: Website – https://speakingofjung.com Twitter/X – https://x.com/jungianLaura Instagram – https://instagram.com/jungianlaura Subscribe to this YouTube channel ✦ ✦ ✦
