Absent Fathers, Yearning Sons | Jungian analyst Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D. | Speaking of Jung #161

Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D. is a Jungian psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist working analytically with people worldwide. She holds a master’s degree in social work from Boston University and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from The Union Institute and University. She trained as a Jungian psychoanalyst at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich, Switzerland, where she earned a Diploma in Analytical Psychology (the degree of a Jungian analyst) in 1986. Dr. Schwartz has been a course instructor at both the C.G. Jung Institute and the International School of Analytical Psychology in Zürich, and taught developing Jung groups in Poland and South Africa for the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP). She has spoken at five congresses of the IAAP and this summer will be presenting “AI, Frankenstein, and Analytic Transferences” at the joint IAAP–IAJS conference, Digitalization and Analytical Psychology: Theoretical and Clinical Explorations, at University College London’s Institute of Education. Additional speakers include our previous guests Sonu Shamdasani, Kevin Lu, and Fiann Paul, as well as upcoming guest, Dr. Bob Langan. Dr. Schwartz has appeared on over 100 podcasts and YouTube channels, presented at numerous Jungian conferences, and participated in many teaching events throughout the United States and worldwide, including the With Ukrainian Jungians seminars from 2022-2024. She has had numerous articles published in journals, and as book chapters, on topics such as fathers, narcissism, aging, Sylvia Plath, French psychoanalysts Julia Kristeva and André Green, the puella archetype, and the fascist mind. She is the author of five books on analytical psychology, all published by Routledge. Her first title, The Absent Father Effect on Daughters, published in 2020, was the subject of Episode 76. She later joined us for Episode 125 to discuss her second book, Imposter Syndrome and the ‘As-If’ Personality in Analytical Psychology, published in 2023. Last year, she returned to talk about her third book, A Jungian Exploration of the Puella Archetype, in Episode 136, and earlier this year we discussed her 2025 book, An Analytical Exploration of Love and Narcissism, in Episode 157.
