Recovery Entrepreneurs: A Pathway Back to Purpose | David Nelson | TEDxJohnsonCity

What if the path to rebuilding a life after addiction starts with seeing potential where others see limitations? In this powerful TEDx talk, a personal experience leads to a deeper exploration of the barriers people face during recovery and the overlooked strengths that can emerge from their journeys. Through stories of resilience, reinvention, and entrepreneurship, this talk challenges us to rethink how we support those in recovery and imagine new pathways toward purpose and opportunity. David Nelson is the Executive Director of FoundersForge (a nonprofit entrepreneur center located in Johnson City) and East Tennessee State University faculty member in the Entrepreneurship Program. David's passion is empowering underdog entrepreneurs throughout the Appalachian Highlands, and through impactful regional initiatives — from startup bootcamps to pitch competitions — he helps make entrepreneurship more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable throughout rural and emerging markets. A seasoned entrepreneur himself, David has launched multiple tech ventures across sectors including healthcare, software, and agency services, bringing real-world startup experience to his work. Under his guidance, FoundersForge provides free mentorship, coaching, networking opportunities, and programming that connects founders with critical resources, investors, and community partners — all designed to stimulate economic growth and innovation across Northeast Tennessee and beyond. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
