A hostage negotiator's guide to being conflict-ready | Ryan Dunlap | TEDxPortland

16:08

Conflict is often framed as something we should embrace, but former hostage negotiator Ryan Dunlap argues that conflict itself is neither healthy nor unhealthy, it simply reveals the emotional health of the people involved. Drawing from law enforcement, crisis negotiation, leadership coaching, and the often harder conversations at home, he explains why many people don’t have a conflict problem as much as a pressure problem. In this talk, he offers practical lessons for building the capacity to handle hard moments: start small, master the basics, and prioritize recovery after conflict. Healthy outcomes don’t come from healthy conflict; they come from healthier people. Ryan Dunlap is a former Detective and SWAT Hostage Negotiator who founded Conflictish®, a conflict strategy firm dedicated to helping leaders turn conflict into their greatest competitive advantage. Drawing from his experience in law enforcement, Ryan specializes in bringing proven strategies from the interrogation room into the boardroom, transforming how leaders speak and lead during high-pressure moment. He is also the author of How to Untie a Balloon: a Negotiator's Guide to Avoid Popping Under Pressure, and has lectured on conflict strategy at many academic, corporate, and non-profit institutions. The next generation of voting reform | Sara Wolk | TEDxMtHood

14:21

Sara Wolk cares deeply about making sure everyone's vote truly counts equally. We are accustomed to giving star ratings to so many things in our society — books, films, restaurants, hotels, music albums, the list goes on. Our favorites get five stars, and we don’t give any stars when we have a bad experience. Why not use the same star ratings for political candidates? Sara Wolk is the Executive Director of the Equal Vote Coalition, a nonprofit fighting for true equality in the vote itself. Her background spans from the sustainable agriculture and architecture fields to participating on an ecological survey project to protect Ecuador’s Cloud Forests that helped cement an international judicial precedent on the rights of nature. Fixing capitalism with more capitalists | William A. Mundell | TEDxClaremont Graduate University

14:37

American capitalism has been framed as a battle between labor and capital. William (Bill) Mundell argues that this story is outdated and holding America back. Drawing on groundbreaking AI-supported research, Bill reveals a powerful truth: companies that invest more equity in their employees outperform the market, growing value for shareholders while enabling more Americans to build wealth. The most powerful wealth-building asset in America today is company equity. However, it remains concentrated in the hands of a small fraction of the population. As struggling younger generations question capitalism itself, Bill explains that companies can use data to reform the damaged relationship between capital and labor, unlock economic mobility, and rebuild trust in the system. The future of prosperity depends on moving employees from the role of spectators to a nation of participants. That begins with giving them a real stake in the value they help create. William Mundell has had a career spanning finance, public policy, and entertainment. He has served as CEO and Chairman of multiple companies and currently leads two mission‑driven organizations: Neurosphere Entertainment and Work to Own, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding economic mobility. His film work includes the acclaimed documentary Better Angels and the political feature Gerrymandering, reflecting his long‑standing commitment to civic engagement and cross‑cultural understanding. The future is being conditioned, not just coded | Marie-Lou Poirrier | TEDxVUAmsterdam

18:09

In her talk, Marie-Lou explores how artificial intelligence is not only transforming technology, but also revealing deeply human relational and emotional patterns that have long shaped our lives. What begins in the personal sphere does not stay there. These patterns become families, cultures, and systems, and AI is now amplifying them at scale. She examines what happens when powerful technologies are built on underdeveloped relational foundations. As AI expands into how we work, decide, and even process emotions, the real question becomes not only what these systems can do, but what in us they are meeting and magnifying. Marie-Lou argues that breaking this cycle requires more than information or innovation alone. It requires stronger human capacities: self-awareness, emotional literacy, better conversations, and the ability to relate with more maturity, responsibility, and depth. In this way, her talk is a call to invest not only in artificial intelligence, but just as seriously in human intelligence. Marie-Lou explores how we live fully and together in a complex world. Her work draws from psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and communication. She facilitates emotional and relational intelligence for leaders and teams, strengthening the human capacities that drive how teams think, decide, and collaborate. She believes our high-tech world requires high-humanity, and that emotional and relational literacy is essential for the systems we’re building. 260.000 Reasons To Build Trust | Julie Fleischer | TEDxVUAmsterdam

15:59

In her talk, Julie explores how many healthcare systems in Sub-Saharan Africa are trapped in a vicious cycle: low-quality care leads to low trust, low trust reduces willingness to pay, and without funding, quality does not improve. Her central argument is that trust is not a side issue in healthcare. It is the foundation that makes the whole system work. Using the story of Grace, a pregnant woman living outside Dar es Salaam, Julie shows what this crisis looks like in practice. The real question, she argues, is not whether care exists, but whether women can trust it, afford it, and rely on it when they need it most. She then presents how connected care models such as MomCare can begin to break this cycle. Through digital registration, shared health records, teleconsultation, and incentives for better-quality care, the system becomes more accessible, accountable, and patient-centered. The result is not only better outcomes, but growing trust. Julie’s talk is ultimately a call to rethink global health not only in terms of medicine or funding, but in terms of the infrastructure of trust that allows care to reach people and truly matter. Julie Fleischer is a Dutch global health innovator, designer, entrepreneur and engineer working to improve maternal and child health systems in low-resource settings. She leads innovation for the PharmAccess MomCare program, which has improved financial access to and quality of care for over 100,000 women. With a Master’s degree in Biomechanical Engineering from Delft University of Technology, Julie combines design thinking, data, technology, and partnerships to develop scalable solutions that strengthen healthcare delivery and financing for underserved communities. How Smarter Structural Design Can Help Solve the Climate Crisis | Caitlin Mueller | TEDxMIT

10:26

What if the biggest breakthrough in sustainable construction isn't a new material—but using far less of it? MIT structural engineer Caitlin Mueller explores how architecture, engineering, and computational design can dramatically reduce the environmental impact of the built environment. With buildings responsible for roughly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, she argues that material efficiency is one of the most powerful tools available today. Drawing inspiration from nature, historical engineering, and the work of artist Janet Echelman, Mueller demonstrates how designers can collaborate with the laws of physics to create elegant, lightweight structures that use dramatically less material while remaining incredibly strong. She also showcases new computational tools developed at MIT that are reshaping architecture, public art, and the future of sustainable construction. This inspiring talk offers a vision for a future where innovation, engineering, and creativity work together to build a more resilient and climate-conscious world. Caitlin Mueller is a researcher, designer, and educator working at the interface of architecture and structural engineering. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Building Technology Program, where she leads the Digital Structures research group. As a researcher, Mueller focuses on developing new computational methods and tools for synthesizing architectural and structural intentions in early-stage design. She also works in the field of digital fabrication, with a focus on linking high structural performance with new methods of architectural making. Why I Make Robots That Move With You | Angelina Kozhevnikova | TEDxVUAmsterdam

13:12

In her talk, Angelina explores how our ideas about robots have long been shaped by fear, control, and domination. Drawing on science fiction, mythology, and personal experience, she argues that the stories we tell about machines often create a cycle in which fear leads to control, and control deepens fear. She then offers a different model. Instead of seeing robots as either servants or threats, Angelina asks what becomes possible when humans and machines move with one another rather than trying to dominate one another. Through her interactive robotic artwork I/Another, she shows how relation, responsiveness, and mutual adjustment can create a more open and alive form of interaction. Her talk is ultimately a call to rethink technology itself. Rather than building systems around obedience, prediction, and control, Angelina invites us to imagine technologies grounded in relation, where intelligence emerges through interaction and where humans and machines can create something together that neither could create alone. Angelina Kozhevnikova is known for her transdisciplinary work at the intersection of art, research, and robotics. Through her studio Animaspace, she creates interactive robotic installations and performances that invite people to experience alternative technological futures and question dominant narratives around AI and automation. Her artistic practice centers on embodiment, presence, and how humans and machines act together. In parallel, she researches Human–Robot Collaboration at TU Delft, focusing on how humans and robotic systems can work together in complex, real-world contexts. Her work has been exhibited internationally and supported by major Dutch and European cultural, societal, and academic institutions. π and the shape of progress | Nehir Kırkgöz | TEDxVUAmsterdam

9:28

In her talk, Nehir explores π not only as a mathematical constant, but as a symbol of the cycles that shape our lives. Pi originates from one of the most fundamental forms in nature: the circle. It describes the ratio between a circle’s circumference and its diameter. No matter the circle’s size, this ratio remains constant, reflecting how different experiences and scales in life often share the same underlying patterns. Circular motion surrounds us everywhere: wheels turning, clocks ticking, planets orbiting, even the rhythm of our breathing. These recurring patterns illustrate how humans move through time and experience the world in cycles. Through this perspective, π becomes more than a number. It represents continuity within change and invites reflection on renewal, growth, and the repeating patterns that shape individuals, communities, and humanity as a whole. Nehir Kirkgoz is a second-year Computer Science Honours student at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Originally from Istanbul, she has lived in Amsterdam for the past nine years. She is deeply fascinated by mathematics and the many ways it connects with everyday life. Nehir enjoys both learning and sharing knowledge, and believes that accessible education and sustained curiosity are essential drivers of innovation and long-term change. What if the voice in your head isn't you? | Laryssa Creswell | TEDxVUAmsterdam

9:05

In her talk, Laryssa reflects on the messages we inherit through family, culture, and love, and how those messages can quietly become rules that shape how we live. Through the story of caring for her mother after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, she explores how devotion, responsibility, and guilt can become deeply entangled. She shows how guilt is often loyalty to a message that no longer fits the life we are living now. What changed her perspective was the realization that caring for someone does not always have to mean doing everything alone. Sometimes love can look less like sacrifice and more like surrender, support, and redefining what care truly means. Laryssa broadens this idea beyond caregiving, arguing that many people live by inherited messages about strength, peacekeeping, self-sacrifice, and worth. Her talk offers a path forward: recognize the message, question it, and choose what is true now. In doing so, she invites the audience to release the stories that confine them and write new ones that allow them to live more freely and honestly. Dr. Laryssa M. Creswell is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with over 20 years of experience specializing in trauma-focused treatment for women and teen girls. She holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology and is a Board-Certified Music Therapist. She is the founder and owner of Fearlessly Inspired Therapeutic Solutions, LLC, a group mental health private practice based in Annapolis, Maryland, where she creates a safe, affirming, and non-judgmental space for clients to process their experiences and navigate healing. Beyond her clinical work, she is an author, speaker, professor, and co-founder of Sisters In Healing, empowering women to reconnect with their voice, reclaim their truth, and lead with authenticity and courage. The Anatomy Of An Idea | Jimmy Xavier | TEDxBITBangalore

15:08

Why do so many "brilliant" ideas fail the moment they hit the real world? After 24 years in Indian FM radio, creative powerhouse Jimmy Xavier has seen spectacular successes and a few spectacular failures. In this insightful talk, he deconstructs "The Anatomy of an Idea," revealing why the most dangerous thing in a brainstorming meeting isn't silence — it’s confidence. Through hilarious and honest backstage stories from the radio industry, Jimmy breaks down the lifecycle of creativity into three critical dimensions: 1. The Trap of the Meeting Room 2. The "Karaoke" Culture 3. The Unsung Hero of Innovation Ultimately, Jimmy reminds us that the true anatomy of an idea isn't about the concept itself—it’s about the person who holds it. A great idea in a scared mind never leaves the room, but a mediocre idea backed by courage, empathy, and execution can change everything. The idea is not the genius. You are. With over two decades in radio, Jimmy Xavier has built a career around stories, conversations, and human connection. Known for his, engaging presence, and thoughtful approach to communication, he has connected with audiences across both radio and podcasting through conversations that go beyond the surface. Through years behind the microphone, Jimmy has developed a unique perspective on creativity, curiosity, and the way powerful ideas take shape. Now, he explores the anatomy of an idea and what transforms an ordinary thought into something unforgettable.
