Today, May 30th 2026, marks 30 years since the first inflow to the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund (NBIM). Erik Hilde was one of the portfolio managers handling the first ever transaction, and he still works here to this day.
On a bill dated May 30 1996, it states the transfer of enmilliardnihundreogåttienmillioneretthundreogtjueåttetusenfemhundreogto. In English, that’s about 2 billion Norwegian kroner.
30 years later, the fund manages 2 trillion dollars on behalf of the people of Norway.
